I served as a strike captain for United Teachers of Los Angeles during the 2019 and 2023 Los Angeles teachers strikes, as well as for the 2026 strike, which was called off at 2 AM on Tuesday, April 14–4 ½ hours before picket lines went up at nearly 1,000 schools throughout Los Angeles.
I’ve written a series of pieces for Counterpunch about the 2026 battle, in which 68,000 Los Angeles Unified School District education workers across three unions pledged to strike in solidarity with one another if LAUSD did not sign agreements with all three.
