His Side Campaign Against 'Boys are Stupid' Products

Read Glenn's column "Why I Launched the Campaign Against 'Boys are Stupid' Products" >>

Final Update, March 4, 2004

As I said during my debate with Todd Goldman on CNBC last week, and as I discussed on the show last night, we can't seem to find any retail stores which still carry the "Boys are Stupid" products. When I said this on CNBC Todd Goldman told me "you need to get out more," which is probably true, but doesn't apply in this case. There are many stores which have pulled the products as a result of the media storm, even though we never targeted them specifically. We certainly did what we set out to do and at this point we are suspending the campaign. Thanks to all of you who supported us and helped make the campaign's phenomenal success possible.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Sacks

Update: February 16, 2004

As I mentioned on the show, we did not announce a new target for our campaign against "Boys are Stupid" products because we're having a difficult a time finding retail outlets which still carry them.

We were told that Bloomingdale's carries them, but when my producer called their store in Los Angeles the manager told him they used to carry the products but "got an order from corporate" to take all of it off the shelves about a week ago because "some radio show was leading a campaign against them."

Also, Holt Renfrew, a 170 year-old Canadian chain with outlets in most major Canadian cities, withdrew the products and apologized after being contacted by some Canadian His Side supporters. Delia’s, which carried the "Boys are Stupid" products and has 60 stores in 22 states, told the media a couple weeks ago that they would no longer carry the products.

If anybody knows of other major stores which are still carrying the products please let us know at Glenn@HisSide.com.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Sacks

Round 5: Dillard's

Tom Patterson, Dillard's Vice President Director of Stores, sent out letters to His Side listeners on February 9 stating:

"Thank you for advising us about the T-Shirts.  We have instructed our stores to remove them from the sales floor.   The shirts will no longer be offered for sale."

Dillard's carries T-shirts which say "Boys are Stupid--Throw Rocks at Them." They have 338 stores in 29 states and have annual revenues exceeding $8.3 billion. Since our campaign began on December 14, "Boys are Stupid" products have been knocked out of 3,345 retail outlets in 10 countries.

Thanks again to all who supported our campaign.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Sacks

Round 4: Claire's

To All His Side Listeners:

According to the Associated Press, Claire's company spokeswoman Marisa Jacobs says Claire's has "canceled all pending orders that bear any of the slogans that people found offensive" in response to the His Side radio campaign. According to AP, Claire's Stores operates more than 2,800 stores in North America, Europe and Japan.

To learn more, see Retailers pull 'Boys Are Stupid' products (MSNBC, 1/29/04) and Radio Campaign Knocks Anti-Boy Products Out of 3,000 Retail Stores (MensNewsDaily.com, 1/29/04).

Best Wishes,
Glenn Sacks

Round 3: Universal Studios

To All His Side Listeners:

Eliot Sekuler, the Vice President of Public Relations for Universal Studios in Hollywood, issued the following statement in response to the His Side campaign:

"Dapy's, a store operated by our company, offers various lines of popular apparel. It has recently come to Senior Management's attention that we have inadvertently offered some items from one of these lines that contain offensive messages.

The T-shirts have been taken off the store's shelves immediately and will no longer be sold at Dapy's or at any other location owned by our company. Our company does not condone any messages of intolerance to any group within our society and we regret having allowed this incident to occur."

Best Wishes,
Glenn Sacks

Round 2: Tilly's

To All His Side Listeners:

Tilly's clothing store agreed to remove the "Boys Are Stupid, Throw Rocks at Them" T-shirts within half a day of the launch of our campaign against them on the January 4 broadcast of His Side.

See the MND NEWSWIRE story "LA Chain Agrees to Pull 'Boys are Stupid' T-Shirts After Storm of Protest from His Side Listeners" for details.

While I appreciate all of your support for our campaign, I'm asking all listeners to please refrain from further calling and writing Tilly's. They have done the right thing by removing the shirts, and further letters and calls to them are neither needed nor desirable.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Sacks

Round 1: Bon-Macy's

To All His Side Listeners,

Bon Macy's has caved in after receiving hundreds of angry letters and calls protesting its "Boys Are Stupid, Throw Rocks at Them" T-shirts. See the MND NEWSWIRE story "Bon-Macy's Pulls Anti-Boy Shirts as His Side Listeners Flood Store with Calls, E-Mails" for details.

I was surprised and pleased to see so many people join in this campaign--I must have received over 100 copies of letters. It's heartening to see men stand up for themselves for a change, and it's equally encouraging to see so many women go to bat for us.

Thanks again to all who participated.

Best Wishes,
Glenn Sacks

'Boys are Stupid' Shirts Worn in our Schools

Today boys have fallen seriously behind girls at all K-12 levels. By high school the typical boy is a year and a half behind the typical girl in reading and writing. Girls get better grades than boys and boys are far more likely than girls to drop out of school or to be disciplined, suspended, held back, or expelled. Boys are four times as likely to receive a diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as girls, and the vast majority of learning-disabled students are boys. Boys are less likely to graduate high school, go to college, or graduate college than girls.

Allowing girls to wear "Boys Are Stupid" shirts rubs salt in the wound--why are administrators and teachers permitting it?

To learn more about the boy crisis in education, see Glenn's columns "Boys: The New Underclass in American Schools," (Los Angeles Daily Journal, San Francisco Daily Journal, 4/15/02),  "The 'Boy Parent Dilemma'" (Los Angeles Daily News, 9/6/02, Pasadena Star-News & Affiliated Papers, 9/12/02), and  "Why Males Don't Go to College" (She Thinks, 11/13/02), and Mysterious Decline-Where Are the Men on Campus?  (Abuse Your Illusions: The Disinformation Guide to Media Mirages and Establishment Lies, May, 2003) (Co-authored with Phil Cook).
