For Labor Day:
'I'm
gonna work on these wires, and some of them are
live. If I hit the wrong one and start to fry, you
pull me out'
I
recently stumbled upon an old column of mine which
discusses the sacrifices that breadwinner dads--particularly
blue collar dads--make for their families. In it,
I included a few stories from when I did construction
work in my mid-20s. They serve to demonstrate the
special hardships that blue-collar men endure to
provide for their families, and perhaps will interest
the reader.
From my column
The Price of Fatherhood--a Father's Reply to Ann
Crittenden's 'Mothers' Manifesto' (Los Angeles
Daily Journal, San Francisco Daily Journal,
1/10/02):
"[Many men are] financially trapped in a hazardous
job--what men's advocate Warren Farrell calls the
'glass cellar of male disposability.' A construction
job I worked at when I was young illustrates well
the untold cost of fatherhood which many men pay.
"I worked at a nuclear power plant in the South.
Every morning we strapped on our tool belts and
hard hats, and made the long climb up the rebar
skeletal frame of the building. Once we were 50
feet up, we hooked our hook belts around the rebar
and then leaned back to work, with most of our weight
on that hook belt. Leaving aside the blistering
heat, the difficult reaches, and the danger of someone
else's tools falling on you, the reality was that
your life--minute by minute, hour after hour, day
after day--was dependent upon that hook belt.
"One day a journeyman electrician called to me
to climb down and help him. He had a rope in one
hand and his tool box in the other. We walked over
to a large room filled with immense electrical panels.
He told me to stand 10 feet behind him and hold
the rope. I had no idea why, but I did as I was
told. He then made the other part of the rope into
a harness, put it on, and said 'I'm gonna work on
these wires, and some of them are live. If I hit
the wrong one and start to fry, you pull me out.'
"I thought he was joking.
"He wasn't.
"He began to work and every once in a while he
would take a tool he was done with and throw it
at my feet, saying "hey--you awake? I got three
kids to feed and they ain't gonna go barefoot 'cause
you aren't payin' attention."
"'No, no, I'm here,' I protested. 'Why don't
they turn off the power so you can do this without
being in danger?'
"'Company won't do it. Too expensive.'
"'More expensive than your life?'
"'To them.'
"'How come you don't just tell them 'no?''
"'Can't. Got kids to feed.'
"'You could do something else. Go to college.'
"'No money for it--got kids, a wife, a mortgage.
Wait 'till you get married and have kids--you'll
see.'
"Lunch time was often the time for 'scare the
new guy' on workplace injuries and safety. Every
man had a horror story to tell, either about what
happened to him or what happened to his buddy. The
guy who shot his nailgun into a knot in wood and
the nail glanced off and nailed his hand to the
wall--just before his ladder came out from under
him. The guy who sliced his fingers off with a saw
and stepped on one as he tried to pick them up one
by one. The guy who repaired power lines and hit
a live wire while working 20 feet up and is only
alive today because his buddy kicked him off the
pole..."

The
Sacrifices Fathers Make to Support Their Families--Billy
Joel's 'The Downeaster 'Alexa''
One
of the
best songs about the sacrifices fathers make
to support their families is Billy Joel's "The Downeaster
'Alexa'." The song is about a working-class fisherman
who works hard and sacrifices at his dangerous job
because "I've got bills to pay and children who
need clothes...I've got people back on land who
count on me."
The fishermen take pride in doing what needs
to be done to take care of their wives and children--"I
worked my fingers to the bone/So I could own my
Downeaster Alexa/And I go where the ocean is deep/There
are giants out there in the canyons/And a good captain
can't fall asleep...Tell my wife I am trolling Atlantis/And
I still have my hands on the wheel."
Alexa is Billy Joel's daughter. It's a powerful
song and video--to listen and watch, click
here. Joel wrote it in support of the struggling
fisherman of Long Island, where he worked on an
oyster boat when he was young.
The Downeaster 'Alexa'
Well I'm on the Downeaster Alexa
And I'm cruising through Block Island Sound
I have charted a course to the Vineyard
But tonight I am Nantucket bound
We took on diesel back in Montauk yesterday
And left this morning from the bell in Gardiner's
Bay
Like all the locals here I've had to sell my home
Too proud to leave I worked my fingers to the bone
So I could own my Downeaster Alexa
And I go where the ocean is deep
There are giants out there in the canyons
And a good captain can't fall asleep
I've got bills to pay and children who need clothes
I know there's fish out there but where God only
knows
They say these waters aren't what they used to be
But I've got people back on land who count on me
So if you see my Downeaster Alexa
And if you work with the rod and the reel
Tell my wife I am trolling Atlantis
And I still have my hands on the wheel
Now I drive my Downeaster Alexa
More and more miles from shore every year
Since they tell me I can't sell no stripers
And there's no luck in swordfishing here
I was a bayman like my father was before
Can't make a living as a bayman anymore
There ain't much future for a man who works the
sea
But there ain't no island left for islanders like
me

One Strike Against Murderess Mary Winkler Getting
Custody of Her Children
Background:
Murderess Mary Winkler--who shot her husband in
the back and then refused to aid him or call 911
as he slowly bled to death for 20 minutes--walked
away a free woman last month after serving a farcically
brief "sentence" for her crimes.
Winkler scammed the court with uncorroborated
claims that Matthew (pictured with his wife and
three daughters) abused her. According to the testimony
from Matthew Winkler's nine-year-old daughter, Patricia,
the dead father--who as he lay dying looked at his
wife and asked "why?"--was a good man and did not
abuse her mother.
Winkler at first claimed the shooting was
an accident and that she panicked, but after her
arrest, she switched to the "abused woman" defense
that killer women employ so effectively. There was
no evidence or corroboration of her abuse claims,
but the jury found her guilty of the lesser crime
of voluntary manslaughter. After her conviction,
she served a mere week in prison, then two months
in a mental health facility. Since Mary Winkler's
arrest, the couple's three children have been cared
for by Matthew Winkler's parents, who have filed
court papers seeking to terminate her parental rights.
To learn more about this horrendous injustice, click
here.
The Tennessee Supreme Court has denied a
request by Mary Winkler to intervene in her custody
case, which apparently will make it more difficult
for her to regain custody of her kids. The Associated
Press article on it is below.
What's really amazing is the way Winkler sees
herself as the victim of her murdered husband's
parents. Her court pleading reads "The three minor
children continue to be withheld from their mother
without just cause." "Without just cause?" How about
the fact that she shot the children's father in
the back and let him slowly bleed to death for 20
minutes? If that's not "just cause" for withholding
a child from a parent, what could ever be?
Winkler also whines that the children's "grandfather
threatened to call the sheriff if Winkler tried
to see the children." What a bastard--I guess he
still holds a grudge against Mary for, you know,
murdering his son.
State Supreme Court will not intervene in Winkler
custody case
Associated Press, 9/4/07
JACKSON, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Supreme Court
has denied a request to intervene in a case that
will determine whether Mary Winkler regains custody
of her three young daughters.
Winkler was hoping the court would the court
to stop an attempt by the children's paternal grandparents,
Dan and Diane Winkler, to adopt them over their
mother's objections.
Winkler gave the grandparents temporary custody
of the children in 2006 after she was arrested in
the shooting death of her minister husband at the
Selmer parsonage where they lived.
Winkler's attorney in the custody case, Kay Farese
Turner, did not immediately return a call seeking
comment on Tuesday morning.
She has asked a juvenile court in McNairy County
to return the children and in April a court appointed
guardian testified that the girls could go back
to their mother.
But the juvenile court halted its proceedings
without a ruling when the grandparents asked a chancery
court where they live in Carroll County to terminate
Winkler's parental rights and let them adopt the
girls.
The filing before the Supreme Court said Winkler
has seen her daughters only twice since March 2006
and not at all since September. It claims the grandfather
threatened to call the sheriff if Winkler tried
to see the children.
"The three minor children continue to be withheld
from their mother without just cause resulting in
substantial mental and emotional harm to mother
and her children," according to the court petition
filed last month.
Winkler was convicted of voluntary manslaughter
in April. She was freed last month after spending
12 days in jail and about two months at a mental
health facility.
The Tennessee Court of Appeals has declined previously
to get involved in the custody battle, claiming
it did not have jurisdiction over the case.

For
Spanish-speaking readers, I was quoted by the
Univision network in their recent piece
"El rol del padre divorciado--Como mantenerse cerca
de los hijos" ("The Role of Divorced Dads--How
to Maintain Your Relationship with Your Children").
I discussed the difficulties divorced dads face,
in part because of mothers' interference with fathers'
relationships with their children. I also discussed
the importance of fathers' integrating themselves
into their children's school and athletic activities,
particularly as the kids get older. I cited the
recent Boston College study on the importance of
noncustodial fathers in inner-city, minority families.
Though my Spanish is deteriorating steadily as
I age and get out of practice, I occasionally appear
on Spanish TV or radio. One of the more interesting
shows was a special Univision's Aqui y Ahora

A Candidate for Father of the Year
Many
of my readers are fathers who've been locked out
of their children's lives after a divorce or separation.
That's why we fatherhood/shared parenting advocates
are always thrilled when some SOB father who
does enjoy joint custody mistreats his children.
Today's case in point, Lucien Hoffman, who (allegedly)
left his two year-old daughter in a hot car for
two hours while he was.....in a whorehouse. Nice
job, pal.
Apparently Hoffman never learned what most dads
who have daughters understood the moment our daughters
were born--dads are their little girls' protectors.
I'm not sure what Hoffman's punishment will be.
(I might suggest a rope and a tree). Fortunately
the girl is ok and is now with child protective
services--let's hope she's reunited with her mother,
ASAP. The article is below, a video of the news
report can be found
here.
Two Year Old Left In Car While Dad Is In Brothel
September 3, 2007
A two year old is in protective custody Monday
after being left in a burning hot car while authorities
say her father was in a brothel.
The Storey County sheriff's department said,
Lucien Hoffman, was inside the "Mustang Ranch" when
deputies arrived Sunday evening.
Security guards were the first to find his daughter,
paramedics who then arrived treated her for dehydration.
Authorities say she'd been left, unattended,
for about two hours in 95-degree heat.
Hoffman was arrested for child neglect.
He is being held at the Storey County detention
facility on 40-thousand dollars bail.
The sheriff's department says Hoffman who's from
Bend, Oregon has joint custody of the girl.

Tim McGraw: 'You've had me wrapped around your finger
since the day you were born' (Music Video)
"I
remember I thought you looked like an angel wrapped
in pink so soft and warm / You've had me wrapped
around your finger since the day you were born...
"When you were in trouble that crooked little
smile could melt my heart of stone / Now look at
you, I've turned around and you've almost grown...
"Sometimes you're asleep I whisper 'I Love
You!' in the moonlight at your door / As I walk
away, I hear you say, 'Daddy Love You More!'"
Country & Western singer Tim McGraw performs
many songs about fatherhood and family, and his
words and observations are often dead-on. One example
is his song Grown Men Don't Cry--see my
blog post
Tim
McGraw: '...my little girl says 'I love you dad'.
Another is his 2006 song My Little Girl.
McGraw has three young daughters. As I'm sure is
true for many of you, McGraw's lyrics above are
pretty much a perfect description of my relationship
with my little daughter. "You've had me wrapped
around your finger since the day you were born"--yup,
that's about it.
To watch the music video to the song, which was
part of the soundtrack to the 2006 movie Flicka,
click
here. The full lyrics to the song are below.
My Little Girl
Gotta hold on easy as I let you go.
Gonna tell you how much I love you,
though you think you already know.
I remember I thought you looked like an angel wrapped
in pink so soft and warm.
You've had me wrapped around your finger since the
day you were born.
Your beautiful baby from the outside in.
Chase your dreams but always know the road that'll
lead you home again.
Go on, take on this whole world.
But to me you know you'll always be, my little girl.
When you were in trouble that crooked little
smile could melt my heart of stone.
Now look at you, I've turned around and you've almost
grown.
Sometimes you're asleep I whisper "I Love You!"
in the moonlight at your door.
As I walk away, I hear you say, "Daddy Love You
More!".
Someday, some boy will come and ask me for your
hand.
But I won't say "yes" to him unless I know, he's
the half
that makes you whole, he has a poet's soul, and
the heart of a man's man.
I know he'll say that he's in love.
But between you and me. He won't be good enough!

When Dad Does It, He's a Deadbeat and a
Deserter, When Mom Does It, She's a Hero
"Child
advocates on Wednesday hailed the actions
of a teenage mother who left her 8-month-old
baby girl at a fire station -- even though
[the girl] was too old for Florida's so-called
safe haven law, which allows parents to
leave newborns up to three days old at a
hospital, fire station or emergency medical
complex anonymously and without the fear
of a criminal investigation...
"'I think it was pretty courageous
that she recognized that somebody could
take care of the baby better than her,'
said Scott Lindeman...'[the mother] is very
brave,' said Nick Silverio...'She did the
right thing.'"
The Orlando Sentinel article
below sings the praises of a mother who
abandoned her baby at a fire station. I
don't exactly fault the mother--she's young
and probably distraught and confused--but
I think the labels of "bravery" and "courageous"
are a little absurd. If it were a father
who had abandoned a baby at a fire station,
even a young father, the words for him wouldn't
be nearly as kind.
I've often wondered why women who give
their children up for adoption are often
considered heroic ("they gave the child
life and then allowed it to go to a good
home"), but fathers who feel unequipped
to take care of their children are vilified
as "deadbeats" and "deserters." I discussed
this double standard some in my co-authored
column
Respect a Man's Choice, Too (8/1/06),
written for the left-wing website AlterNet.
The Orlando Sentinel article
even expresses sympathy for a mother who
called a Florida child welfare agency to
ask if they would take her son--who was
12! Imagine a father wanting to dump his
12-year-old kid on the state being treated
sympathetically.
Mom praised for leaving baby at fire station
Orlando Sentinel, 8/30/07
Child advocates on Wednesday hailed the
actions of a teenage mother who left her
8-month-old baby girl at a fire station
-- even though the law designed to save
abandoned babies didn't apply to her case.
The little girl, apparently well-fed
and cared for, was too old for Florida's
so-called safe haven law, which allows parents
to leave newborns up to three days old at
a hospital, fire station or emergency medical
complex anonymously and without the fear
of a criminal investigation.
So detectives with the Orange County
Sheriff's Office were called in to investigate
the 17-year-old mother and the events that
led up to her decision to surrender her
child before sunrise Wednesday.
"I think it was pretty courageous that
she recognized that somebody could take
care of the baby better than her," said
Scott Lindeman, Orange County coordinator
of Safe Haven for Newborns.

The Equal Parenting Party in Suffolk County,
Nassau County, New York
An
announcement from
Stuart Meltzer,
Esq. of Nassau County, New York:
As a result of my over 18 years experience
in the Family, Matrimonial and Criminal
Courts in the New York area, I have witnessed
a steady decline in Equal Protection and
Due Process rights afforded to litigants.
Most disturbing is the fact that those people
who have the smallest voice and least amount
of power in our society, our children, are
losing most. Thus, I view as most important,
based in law and forensic study, our children's
right to liberal access to both a father
and mother.
In New York and especially here in Nassau
County, I have witnessed corruption as Judges
delay cases in order to generate excessive
attorney fees. Similarly, I have witnessed
Judges use "equitable" distribution as an
excuse to engage in outright stealing of
marital estates by sequestering and levying
on the "monied" litigants assets in order
to effectively enrich favored lawyer cronies.
These same lawyers are contributing to their
Judge benefactors election campaigns. This
pattern and practice is being done at the
expense of our children. Judges maintain
this status quo of unjust enrichment because
few litigants have the financial, physical
and emotional reserves necessary to fight
this injustice.
Moreover, since the Bar Association and
Judges protect their own, nothing is done
about the destruction of our Constitutional
rights or the systemic corruption that underlies
this fact. Nearly all of my colleagues acknowledge
what is going on but few wish to rock the
boat. After all, their own economic livelihoods
depend on maintaining the status quo.

Feministing's Jessica Valenti Pushes
the Myth That Women Have Always
Worked Harder Than Men
In
feminist author Jessica Valenti's
recent Feministing.com post
Clorox's history of women's unwaged
labor, she criticizes a Clorox
ad which shows generations of women
doing the laundry. Jessica (pictured)
writes:
"Clorox does end up unintentionally
showing how women have been doing
household grunt work for generations.
The worst line in the commercial
says that 'even a man or two' has
done the laundry. As if all the
women watching are supposed to have
some little laugh to ourselves about
the inequitable division of labor.
'I do shit work for free, tee hee!'"
When I read feminists say things
like this, I wonder where they think
the men were. What about the tens
of millions of male blue collar
workers who put their bodies on
the line in the coal mines and steel
mills so their wives and children
could live in safety and comfort?
What about the tragedies of millions
of American men who were killed
or maimed on what German socialist
Rosa Luxemburg called the "battlefield
of labor?" The miners who died in
cave-ins, explosions, or of black
lung disease. The sailors and fisherman
who died at sea. The oil refinery
workers killed in explosions. The
factory workers killed in industrial
accidents. The construction workers
who died carving train tracks and
then highways through majestic mountain
cliffs or the scorching desert.
The construction workers who died
building our bridges, dams, high
rises, stadiums, and apartments.
Feminists (and our popular culture)
have forgotten (or buried) all of
them. Instead, we pretend that in
the old days men had everything
and women had nothing.
In the pre-feminist era, women
certainly had many legitimate grievances,
and some of those grievances remain
today. However, men have always
sacrificed and suffered for their

Stop the Presses--Child Support Official Admits
the Obvious: 'Deadbeats' Don't Pay Their Support
Because They Don't Earn Enough MoneyI've
been hard on child support officials in the past
for their ridiculous pretense that when fathers
don't pay their child support, it means that they
have the money but are being stingy with their kids.
Research shows just the opposite--the fathers who
can pay, usually do so. Most who don't pay, can't.
I want to commend child support enforcement in
this blog post, so I won't belabor the point. To
learn more about the problems with the child support
system, see my co-authored column
When Beating up on
'Deadbeat Dads' is Unfair
(Houston Chronicle,
1/7/07), or click
here.
In
this article, David Engle, director of the Washington
County Department of Social Services, explains that
one of the biggest barriers to paying support is
unemployment. He says:
"The No. 1 reason why people can't pay their
support is they're not able to find a job, or a
job doesn't give them sufficient funds to pay the
support," he said.
In another positive, according to
this article, "The Hamilton County Juvenile
Court and the Child Support Enforcement Agency [in
Ohio] is offering a one-week amnesty program where
warrants will be dropped if parents appear in court...The
appearance erases the warrant, which means they
are not subject to immediate arrest. The parents
still must appear in court and deal with whatever
child support issues were facing them when they
did not appear for the original court hearing, but
they can start the process fresh, said Brian Gregg,
spokesperson for the Hamilton County Job & Family
Services, which includes the support agency.
"'They can go out and find an job and start paying,'
he said. 'A lot of people show up with a payment,
but they don't have to. This is a fresh start.'"
I commend both David Engle and Brian Gregg.

FOX News: Men and Only Men Steal from Their Spouses
& Cheat on Them
"Infidelity is nothing new. But more and more
women are finding out, when their guys cheat, they
also empty out the family bank account. The spouses
find out that they are not only alone, but also
broke."
The report below from FOX News 11 in Los Angeles
is unbelievably gender biased--almost to the point
of sounding like a parody. We're given the tales
of victim after victim whose husbands allegedly
emptied out their bank accounts and deserted them
for mistresses.
Interestingly, I hear from men all the time whose
wives have siphoned off their money or emptied out
their bank accounts in preparation for their divorces.
When the men try to explain this to the family court
judge, they say usually the judge has no interest
in it, and the theft stands.
Listening to this nonsense one would imagine
that infidelity was a vice owned exclusively by
the male of the human species. In reality, research
estimates that for every five unfaithful husbands,
there are four unfaithful wives.
To watch the report, click
here.
I suppose there could be one element of truth
to this report--men probably are more likely to
spend money on "The Other Woman" than women are
to spend it on "The Other Man." This isn't because
the men are more vile, but instead because in most
romantic relationships, men--not women--are expected
to pay for the vacation, the hotel, the weekend
in Vegas, etc.

'My mom has never been married and I would like
a dad'
Background:
Charlotte Hardwick's Dear Judge (Kid's Letters
to the Judge) is a fascinating collection of
letters which children caught in divorces have written
to family law judges.
In the letter
below, a fatherless young girl writes a judge asking,
"If a good dad that is getting kicked out of his
family needs a new one, please make sure he sees
our picture."
Dear Judge,
I heard on the television that half of the people
who get married are getting divorced. I think about
half of those people are dads.
Some must still be good. My mom has never been married
and I would like a dad.
Could you put this picture of me and my mom on the
front of your desk in the court? If a good dad that
is getting kicked out of his family needs a new
one, please make sure he sees our picture. If a
bad dad sees our picture and asks about us tell
him we are not home.
I am pretty and a good girl. My mom is pretty and
a good mom. We have a house and will get a dog if
you think it will help.
Thank you, Trish P.
